Thanjavur, or popularly known as Tanjore is a place that gained great prominence during the Chola period between the 11th and the 14th century. Thus it also imbibed the art and architecture that seems to mark the Chola period in every part of Tamil Nadu. Thanjavur is one place that is absolutely glorious with its culture and the art that is a very integral part of the land. Thanjavur derives its name from Tanjan, an asura ruler, who was killed by Lord Vishnu and Sri Anandavalli Amman for devastating the neighborhood and was granted his last request that the city be named after him. This is one place where you truly revel in the glory of Chola architecture. A place that has seen may dynasties even after the Cholas, this is a place that no one destroyed because the temples are truly glorious. The city is well known worldwide for its antiques as well as exquisite handicrafts. Thanjavur is also known as the Rice Bowl of South India as it lies in the fertile Cauvery delta region and rice is the main cultivation crop here. Of course the Tanjore paintings are a speciality of this land and the beautiful art originated right here and still have demand all over the world. The Brahadeeshwara temple with its massve shrine and its beautiful and intricate art that adorns all the walls of the temple, the Sangeetha Mahal or the hall of music with its tremendous architecture and perfect acoustics and the Chandra Bhagawan temple with its great beliefs and offerings to the moon God are but some of the place that you should definitely visit while you are in Thanjavur.
