Kannur was, is and probably will always be a very important and prosperous city. A place which is extremely famous for being the land of the looms, Kannur is one of the biggest cities in Kerala and is has crossed the one million mark of people here. Today one of the most developing cities in India, Kannur is a place that does the whole country proud.
The base of one of the 62 army cantonments in the country, it has the third largest naval base in Asia. One of the most important cantonments at that, Kannur today is a very cosmopolitan city which is growing in leaps and bounds. It was, i ancient times a village which in the middle ages developed into a port town. Because of its proximity to the Arabian sea and being a great outlet, there were trade relations between this place and Persia.
Kannur is famous to all travellers for its pristine white beaches. Payyambalam Beach is a famous Kannur beach with an unbroken coastline of a few kilometres. From the beach, one can see ships in transit along the Malabar Coast, from beyond Calicut. This is a beautiful stretch which offers a stunning view sometimes even to far lands. The Baby beach, Meenkunnu beach and Mopla Bay are some of the other places which are of great interest to all the travellers.
